Valve’s Steam Machine Pricing Revealed: Higher Than Expected
After more than seven months of speculation, Valve has officially announced the pricing for its highly anticipated Steam Machine. Contrary to earlier leaks and predictions, the base model will launch at a premium price of US$1,049. This figure positions the Steam Machine well above the cost of current-generation consoles like the Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5, even after their recent price increases.
The base configuration of the Steam Machine includes 512 GB of local storage. For users seeking more capacity, a 2 TB version is available for US$1,349. The price difference between the two models exceeds the retail cost of a mid-range 2 TB NVMe SSD, raising questions about the value proposition for potential buyers. In the Eurozone, the base model is priced at €1,039, while the 2 TB variant comes in at €1,359.
Steam Machine Bundles and Availability
Valve is also offering bundles that include the Steam Controller. The 512 GB Steam Machine bundled with a controller starts at US$1,228 (€1,108), while the 2 TB bundle is priced at US$1,428 (€1,428). Both 2 TB options come with two additional faceplates: one in red fabric and another in solid walnut, adding a touch of customization for enthusiasts.
However, purchasing a Steam Machine is not as straightforward as visiting an online store. Interested buyers must sign up for a chance to purchase the device before June 25. Valve is using a randomized selection process for email addresses, aiming to ensure fairness and reduce frustration. While this approach may help prevent scalpers from acquiring large quantities for resale, it also means that not everyone who signs up will be able to purchase a unit immediately.
Additional requirements include having a Steam account in good standing with at least one purchase made before April 27 of this year. Each household is limited to one Steam Machine. Those who miss the sign-up deadline will be placed at the end of the randomized list, and no changes can be made after registration.
