NVIDIA Releases Native Windows-on-Arm Toolkit for RTX Spark Platform
Recently, NVIDIA made headlines by launching its first native Windows-on-Arm toolkit for the RTX Spark platform. This development marks a significant step forward for Arm-based computing, particularly for users seeking advanced graphics capabilities on non-x86 systems.
RTX 4060 Running on Arm-Powered Huawei Qingyun Desktop
Shortly after NVIDIA’s announcement, a Chinese developer and modder known as VoidTech demonstrated a successful implementation of an NVIDIA RTX 4060 GPU on a Huawei Qingyun desktop powered by the Kunpeng 920 Arm CPU. The process was detailed in a video shared on Bilibili, where the developer outlined the technical steps involved in achieving this milestone.
To enable support, the developer extracted the ARM64 driver from NVIDIA’s Spark software. As a result, the RTX 4060 was recognized by both NVIDIA’s driver and the popular GPU monitoring tool TechPowerUp GPU-Z. The GPU was able to accelerate graphics tasks, although it did not provide direct video output. According to the developer, this makes the setup suitable primarily for streaming applications.
Overcoming Platform Compatibility Challenges
One of the most notable aspects of this achievement is that the Kunpeng 920 platform was not originally designed to run Windows, presenting a significant compatibility challenge. To address this, the modder utilized the open-source project dixyes/d920s10, which modifies ACPI tables to enable Windows-on-Arm booting on the Kunpeng hardware. This workaround was essential for getting the RTX 4060 operational on the system.
Performance Analysis: GPU vs. CPU Bottlenecks
In practical tests, the RTX 4060 was put through its paces in several games. While the GPU itself functioned as expected, overall gaming performance was limited by the Kunpeng 920’s CPU capabilities. Early benchmarks of the Huawei SoC have shown that its CPU performance lags significantly behind modern x86 processors, often by nearly a decade in terms of raw processing power. This CPU bottleneck was the primary factor holding back gaming performance, rather than any limitation of the RTX 4060 itself.
Future Prospects for Arm-Based Gaming
Looking ahead, the landscape for Arm-based gaming PCs appears promising. Recent benchmark results from platforms like the Qualcomm Snapdragon X2 Elite suggest that, provided there are no major software translation issues, much higher gaming performance could be achievable on more advanced Arm SoCs. As native Windows-on-Arm support continues to improve, the potential for high-performance gaming on Arm-powered desktops is set to grow.
